Information for car users

We are a School Streets school which means that it is illegal to drive along Princess Road (from the junction at Cliffe Road down to the junction by the junior school) between 8.15am and 9.15am in the morning and between 3pm and 4pm in the afternoon (unless you have a permit or a vehicle that falls under an exemption).

Please do not attempt to drive down Princess Road during the restricted times, even on a "one off" occasion. We suggest that you do the following:

  • always arrive in plenty of time.
  • try to make use of the Park & Stride facility at Tesco and enjoy a short walk to school with your child.
  • park with due consideration for the residents of Cliffe Road and Shipman Road. Please do not block their driveways.
  • walk or scoot to school whenever possible. Scooter/ bicycle storage is available. Children and adults must dismount on school grounds.
  • consider car sharing to help reduce congestion..

Further information about the School Streets scheme can be found below.

School Streets

School Streets is a pioneering scheme for improving the environment outside schools, where traffic is restricted by law along road(s) leading up to schools at drop-off and pick-up times. This frees up space on the road to encourage a move towards more active forms of travel, making it easier and safer for children and families to walk, cycle or scoot to school within more pleasant surroundings. School Streets are increasingly popular around the country, and so we’re pleased to be taking part.

Here’s what to look out for:

  • Permanent School Streets road signs, which details the times of the restriction
  • Fewer cars and less congestion (please be aware that permitted and exempt vehicles may be accessing the School Streets zone during the restriction times)
  • More people walking, scooting and cycling
  • Less vehicle noise and cars idling
  • More children enjoying an active journey to school

In practice, this means that it is illegal to drive along Princess Road (from the junction at Cliffe Road down to the junction by the junior school) between 8.15am and 9.15am in the morning, and between 3pm and 4pm in the afternoon, unless you have a permit or vehicles that fall under an exemption.

We ask you please to:

  • Walk, scoot or cycle to school instead of driving
  • If you need to travel by car, park considerately and respectfully away from the School Streets zone and avoid causing any obstruction to the carriageway, footpath or to any points of access.
  • Any permitted or exempt vehicles that need to travel within the School Streets zone need to adhere to the voluntary 5mph speed limit.

A designated PARK & STRIDE venue for parents and carers who need to drive to school is available at the nearby Tesco.

The response to School Streets elsewhere in East Riding has been overwhelmingly positive. Schools notice that more pupils and their families walk, scoot and cycle to school, which not only boosts health and wellbeing but also helps improve the local environment. School Streets also helps with congestion and idling vehicles around the school gate at these busy times, reducing noise and improving the immediate surroundings. More space makes it easier for us all to maintain ‘social distancing’, helping to reduce the risk of spreading Coronavirus. We thank you in advance for helping us make our School Streets scheme a success and improving the environment around the school for the benefit of everyone.
