Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
Foundation Stage 1: Nursery (3-4 year olds)
Children can attend our school nursery for three to five terms depending on their age and can enrol from the term after they turn three. We recognise that this is a crucial stage in children's development as it helps them to get ready for school as well as prepare them for their future learning and successes. We introduce children to a disciplined environment that helps them to learn social behaviours and skills and behave well with others. Our expert staff encourage engagement in learning, develop emotional skills and foster curisity. We teach the children to help others which will enable them to form strong bonds with friends as they grow up. We offer a language rich environemt to challenge little minds and boost cognitive skills, including an early introduction to the school's reading scheme. All this ensures that children who attend our nursery become well-prepared for school.
Foundation Stage 2: Reception (4-5 year olds)
This year group caters for those children who have just started school. Children turn five years old between the 1st September and 31st August. We offer a truly exciting start to school life as children take their ‘first steps’ into the world of education. All our children feel safe, secure and happy in their learning. Teachers know each child's individual needs and create accurate targets for them to achieve regardless of the starting point meaning children make sustained progress. Staff are highly motivated and trained to ensure that all children are allowed the opportunity to learn. We have created an environment that allows children to feel empowered and independent learners, and to develop skills in a safe and exciting way.
Key Stage 1 (KS1)
Year 1 (5-6 year olds)
Year 1 is the first year of the National Curriculum and the start of what is known as "Key Stage 1". All children in Year 1 follow the National Curriculum. The National Curriculum is made up of the core subjects: English, Science and Mathematics and the Foundation subjects: Art & Design, Computing, Design Technology, Geography, History, Music and PE. Reliogious Education (RE) , Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Health Education (RHE) is also taught.
To help ensure that the children settle well into Year 1 after their year in Foundation, many routines are kept the same. The curriculum offered in Year 1 offers a bridge between the play-based approach of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the more formal subject-based requirements of the National Curriculum. During the timetable, there are opportunities for direct teaching as well as teaching through the well-thought out continuous provision areas. This provides children with a smooth transition from their experiences in their first year at school. As the year progresses, there is an expectation that children will be able to participate in increasingly longer direct teaching sessions.
Year 2 (6-7 year olds)
In Year 2, the timetable consists of whole class or small group teaching sessions with the expectation that children will be able to concentrate for longer periods than they did in Year 1. Learning experiences are designed to be active, stimulating and engaging for all pupils. For example, children explore the school grounds whilst learing to use a basic map. Teachers make links to and build upon the skills and knowledge that has been previously taught in the Foundation Stage and Year 1 to deepen children's knowledge and understanding. As they reach the end of Key Stage 1, children in Year 2 are assessed in May using Key Stage 1 statutory test materials.
