Remote education provision: information for parents
This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if local restrictions require entire year groups or individuals to remain at home.
The remote curriculum: what is taught to children at home
The activities take several different forms and could be:
- video links to the Oak Academy online lessons
- links to White Rose Maths
- links to BBC Bitesize
- worksheets
- practical activities
- videos presented by our own teachers
- links to Purple Mash
How long can I expect work set by the school to take children each day?
This will much depend on the age of the child. For our Nursery and Foundation 2 children, a good aim will be to complete the given activities for 1 to 2 hours per day. For children in Year 1 and 2, 3 to 4 hours would be appropriate. Many of the activities are practical and do not require the use of a home computer. For example, children might be asked to complete a shape hunt around their house or to collect a given number of leaves from the garden.
How will my child access any online remote education?
Please visit our school website and click on the Home Learning tab. From here you will be able to select your child’s year group. If you do not have access to a computer, please ask for a home learning paper pack from the school office on 01430 873159.
What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?
We understand that, depending upon home circumstances, parents may not be able to fully support their children in remote learning as they need full adult support. However, there is an expectation that parents endeavour wherever possible to complete the work set for their child. We suggest that you prepare a timetable for your child and include regular breaks within this.
How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?
Parents will receive regular telephone support from their child’s class teacher to find out if they are able to access the remote learning and to share any concerns. During this call, the teacher can answer any questions about home learning and offer any support or guidance. The teacher will also be able to speak to the child which often helps to engage and motivate. Parents are strongly encouraged to post work and communicate via Tapestry (Foundation & Year 1) and Class Dojo (Year 2).
How will you assess my child’s work and progress?
Parents are asked to upload photographs and videos of their child’s home learning via Tapestry or Class Dojo and share their comments. Teachers will then be able to provide appropriate feedback.
How will you work with parents to help a child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?
We recognise that some children, for example those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access all the remote education materials and may have different requirements. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families and we will work with parents and carers to support their children through regular contact with Mrs Wildbore (SENDCO). She will be able to liaise with the class teacher to provide a bespoke programme of work and any particular advice needed.
