Special Educational Needs & Disabilities

Market Weighton Infant School is an inclusive school where we focus on the well-being and progress of every child.  All of our children share an entitlement to high quality education through a vibrant and creative curriculum which meets their social, emotional and learning needs.  We take pride in our provision for pupils with additional needs and implement a ‘whole school approach’ to special educational needs and disabilities which involves all staff adhering to a model of good practice.  All the staff of the school are committed to identifying and providing for the needs of all children in an inclusive environment. We believe in early intervention so when we identify a child experiencing a difficulty we work closely with parents/carers to offer support.

At Market Weighton Infant School, we support all children, enabling them to develop their full potential. Excellent teaching is vital and high-quality learning experiences provide children with the opportunity to learn new skills; acquire knowledge, develop their independence and a love of learning. We recognise that there are occasions where further additional support may be needed to enable our children to reach their goals.

Where required, we seek support and advice from a wide range of outside agencies.  Our SENCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) is Miss Duggleby. Please contact through the school office. Phone: 01430 873159 Email: mwis@eastriding.gov.uk

What is the East Riding's SEND Local Offer?

Local authorities have a statutory duty to develop and publish a Local Offer, setting out in one place information about the support they expect to be available in their area across education, health and social care for children and young people in their area who have SEN or are disabled, including those who do not have EHC plans.

The Local Offer has two key purposes:

  • To provide clear, comprehensive, accessible and up-to-date information about the available provision and how to access it, and
  • To make provision more responsive to local needs and aspirations by directly involving disabled children and those with SEN and their parents, and disabled young people and those with SEN, and service providers in its development and review

Local authorities and their partner bodies and agencies, including schools, must co-operate with each other in the development and review of the Local Offer. This is essential so that the Local Offer provides a comprehensive, transparent and accessible picture of the range of services available.

The Local Offer must include, amongst other information, the following:

  • special educational, health and social care provision for children and young people with SEN or disabilities – this should include online and blended learning
  • other educational provision, for example sports or arts provision, paired reading schemes
  • arrangements for resolving disagreements and for mediation, and details about making complaints
  • arrangements for travel to and from schools
  • support to help children and young people move between phases of education (for example from early years to school, from primary to secondary

A wealth of information about Special Educational Needs and Disability support for 0 to 25 year olds can be found on the Local Authority’s Local Offer website.  Market Weighton Infant School’s contribution to the ‘Local Offer’ can be found in our SEND Education Provider Report and in our SEND Policy below. These documents meet the requiremets of the SEND Code of Practice.

Complaints

We are committed to working closely with parents and carers for the benefit of the children.  No problem is too small and can often be prevented from becoming a bigger issue if you discuss it with us straight away. Legislation requires us to have a clear complaints procedure in place for parents and carers. If you have a complaint, you should follow the procedure set out below:

Complaints procedure

1. Speak to your child’s class teacher. The teacher will listen to your concerns and will follow up issues arising.

2. If you are not satisfied with the response, please contact the school office to make an appointment with the Headteacher.

3. If you continue to feel that your issue has not been resolved, then you can write to the Chair of the School’s Governing Body. Hand in your letter at the school office.

4. Ultimately, if you feel that your complaint has still not been addressed, you should request that your matter is dealt with by the Governing Body’s Complaints Committee. You will then be advised of any further steps to take.

Be assured that you will be listened to fairly and courteously at all levels with a view to amicably resolving any issues or concerns you have regarding your child.

If there is anything you wish to know, please do not hesitate to ask.  We are always more than willing to speak to you about any concerns, queries, or celebrations you may have.
