Meet the Governors of Market Weighton Infant School

Hazel Beales, Local Authority Governor and Vice Chair (end 31/08/2025) Pupil Welfare & Community Committee (Chair of Committee) and Designated Safeguarding Governor

Hailing from Burnley in Lancashire, I moved to Market Weighton in 1980 when I took up a teaching post at Market Weighton School. Originally intending to stay for two years, my teaching career at the secondary school lasted for 35 years and covered a variety of roles: classroom teacher, Head of Year, Head of Department and member of the Senior Leadership Team.  I still maintain my relationship with the school as an examination invigilator and occasionally as a 1:1 tutor. Having ‘retired’, I was approached by Hessle High School. This led to 2 happy years teaching English at GCSE and A level at Hessle and also gave me experience of working in an academy school. My association with the Infant School goes back to 1990. Both my children attended the infant, junior and secondary schools in Market Weighton. I have been a governor at the Infant School for over 25 years and am also a governor of longstanding at Mount Pleasant Junior School. I have the unique position of covering all phases of education in the town.  I believe that schools have a duty to inspire a lifelong love of learning in their students. Examination results are important, but more important is seeing the worth in every child, nurturing those attributes and ultimately giving them the confidence to go out into the world equipped for life’s challenges. Education should be something to be enjoyed - not endured. Nothing pleases me more than seeing a child meeting or exceeding a school’s expectations.  In my spare time I am a member of the Weighton Waytes choir and enjoy all aspects of the creative and performing arts: reading, theatre, music and sport. Travel, at home and abroad, is also something I enjoy as it expands my horizons and has provided me with a wealth of unforgettable experiences.

Wendy Cantrell, Co-opted Governor (end 07/03/2026) Curriculum & School Effectiveness Committee

Stuart Crabb, Parent Governor (end 16/07/27)  Pupil Welfare & Community Committee

Michael Evans, Co-opted Governor (end 06/11/27) Curriculum & School Effectiveness Committee

I live in Maret Weighton and have children that currently attend Market Weighton Infant school.    Originally from Derbyshire, I moved to Yorkshire to study Biology at York University and then went on to qualify as a teacher.  I am currently Assistant Headteacher at Driffield School & Sixth Form.  I am very passionate about education and believe that every child deserves a quality education so that they can flourish and I hope that I can use my knowledge and experience of working in education to support Market Weighton Infant School to maintain its outstanding status and continue to serve the community.

Nicola Lazenby, Co-opted Governor and Chair (end 10/11/2027) Pupil Welfare & Community Committee

I qualified as a primary teacher in 2000. Having worked in mainstream settings for 8 years, I joined Riverside Special School in 2008 as their early years practitioner.  I love working with children and have a passion for special education. I find each achievement rewarding and each child unique.  I became a governor and more recently chair as I enjoy contributing to the school life for all who attend.  My main aim is to ensure that the school remains outstanding.  I also aim to have a dynamic governing body who will strive to challenge the school and maintain the current standards. I am mum to 2 young children (6 and 3) and enjoy spending time with them outdoors, walking, swimming and cycling.  We take the caravan on family holidays to experience different places.  I have even recently started writing articles for Caravan Magazine about our adventures, sites and occasionally include tips.  The remaining spare time I have is spent reading, gardening or decorating.

Rosie Leetham, Staff Governor (end 28/02/2025) (Teacher) Curriculum & School Effectiveness Committee

Hello I’m Rosie Leetham. I grew up in Londesbrough, a small village on the outskirts of Market Weighton. When I was 8 years old, I moved to Market Weighton and have lived here ever since. I attended Market Weighton Infant School as a little girl and have such fond memories of my time here. My little boy Jude, whom I share with my partner Tom, now attends the school and is in Nursery. For as long as I can remember I always wanted to be a teacher. I was extremely lucky in 2010 to be offered a post at Market Weighton Infant School. I now work part-time and am the Year 1 Lead. I am also a member of the Senior Leadership Team. I feel so blessed to work in the school that I attended as a little girl and I am passionate about the community I live in. I already know many parents and it is so lovely to converse with them in both a professional and personal manner each day. In my spare time I enjoy days out with my boys, spending time with my parents, and going to both the theatre and concerts. I am also a big Disney fan and enjoy family holidays to Disney!

Sarah Linstead, Co-Opted Governor (end 16/07/2027) Resources Committee

Sarah Kay-Wood (Headteacher)

What do we do?

We decide what we want Market Weighton Infant School to achieve and we set the framework to get there. So, in discussion with the Headteacher, we set the aims and objectives of the School and agree policies, targets and priorities and then we monitor to see if these objectives are being achieved. In essence, we are there to help take the strategic decisions necessary to ensure that the School continues to flourish but it is not our responsibility to manage the School or to be involved in the day to day running of Market Weighton Infant School. As Governors we are encouraged to visit the School, to get to know it more and to observe how the School is dealing with those issues that interest us. We work with Mrs Kay-Wood in the development of the School, helping to ensure that every child at Market Weighton Infant School reaches their full potential.

To contact us please call the School office on 01430 873159 or send a letter via the office, marked for the confidential attention of the Chair of Governors.

How do we do this?

All of the Governors meet as the full Governing Body once a term but a lot of our work is done through the 3 main Sub Committees which are:

  • Resource Committee is responsible for approving and monitoring the School budget and also personnel matters including staff salaries, appointments.
  • Pupil Welfare & Community Committee deals with building works and maintenance, ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation in the School.
  • Curriculum & School Effectiveness Committee revises and approves School policies, analyses results and monitors progress on the School Development Plan.

There are also various other Sub Committees which meet on an ad hoc basis to deal with specific issues such as staff and parental appeals, complaints, staff and pupil discipline. To see a schedule of this year's meetings and the register of attendance, please scroll to the bottom of this page.

Governor Visits 2023-24

Governors make visits into school to observe and report on a number of areas. Summaries of their reports can be found below.

Health & Safety Visit

All the children got their outer coats, hat and gloves on – the odd one needed some assistance with zips. They lined up in a quiet, orderly manner and proceeded out to the playground.  There were ample staffing levels. The first aid bag was taken out as a precaution. I noticed that all the staff were very diligent and looking around constantly as the children played happily and enthusiastically. The bell was rung at the end of break and children instructed to put all the equipment away tidily, then line up in classes.  The children were well behaved and reacted to instruction immediately.

English Visit

I spent a very enlightening hour with Mr Parker (English Lead) discussing the English curriculum in all years and the assessment and analysis of pupils’ progress in all areas: phonics, reading and writing. The Read, Write Inc scheme is now fully embedded in the school and Y2 are the first year to be fully conversant with this way of teaching and learning. A RWI refresher course was delivered on the January training day, and this was especially beneficial for new staff who were less experienced in the scheme’s delivery and also for more experienced practitioners. The main focus this year is upon Writing. Half termly assessments moderated by year group staff are proving enjoyable for pupils and allow staff to analyse areas of strength and weakness. I was able to scrutinise a selection of books which clearly demonstrated how progression is clearly built into the scheme of work. Many thanks to Mr Parker for his time and candour. I look forward to my next visit.

DT Visit

I had a very enjoyable afternoon in Year 2 assisting the children making wraps.  Food and nutrition is an important element of Design & Technology and the teaching staff work hard to bring this type of project forward.  The children learnt about safety whilst preparing food and how to construct a balanced meal and then produce a wrap. It’s always lovely to see children engrossed, eager and happy. Thank you to all the staff for giving the children the confidence and independence to take part in this valuable project.

RE Church Visit

Today I accompanied a group of children from Year 1 on a local walking tour of Market Weighton.  We walked by the Play Park, Post Office, Town Hall, Giant Bradley statue, St John’s church and visited All Saints Church.

The children discussed what they saw and asked plenty of questions.

Local walking trips like this give the children an awareness of the surroundings where they live and a greater understanding of the various buildings and structures.

All the children were extremely well behaved and really enjoyed the outing.
